Forecasting director George Magliano told a US analyst and media briefing he expected 2008 sales of 13.6m units, the lowest for 15 years, and a further decline to 13.4m in 2009.


Magliano had lowered his forecast after weak September sales, the Reuters news agency said. US sales reached 16.15m units last year.


“The credit crisis has really hurt the economy and consumer confidence,” Global Insight said. “The economy will be particularly brutal on the auto market next year.”


The firm also sees global sales off 1% this year, the first decline since 2001.
