Novelis, which claims to be the world’s leading producer of rolled aluminium, announced a deal with Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) to be sole supplier of automotive sheet products through a multi-year agreement.

JLR will used Novelis rolled aluminium for a wide range of vehicle models as part of its strategy to reduce the weight of its vehicles and decrease CO2 emissions. As a key condition of the sole-supplier relationship, Novelis will recover and recycle all the automaker’s aluminium scrap, creating a closed-loop recycling system.

The Novelis aluminium will be used in the redesigned 2013 Range Rover, the world’s first SUV with a lightweight all-aluminium body structure.

“Novelis’ superior innovation capabilities, technology expertise and global investment strategy for delivering high-quality aluminium sheet make the company an ideal long-term partner for our own sustainable growth strategy,” said JLR senior purchasing manager Mike Brown. “Novelis shares JLR’s goal of achieving the highest life-cycle sustainability and recycled content targets.”

Novelis has long supplied JLR. The agreement expands a two decade history of close cooperation developing lightweight aluminium technologies and further advances their collaboration on recycling aluminium.

“Novelis’ ability to deliver a secure supply of aluminium sheet will enable Jaguar Land Rover to meet the growing demand from its customers worldwide for lighter vehicles and improved fuel economy,” said Roland Harings, vice president, global automotive at Novelis.

“This close partnership reflects the aligned growth paths of both companies in reaching our respective sustainability goals due to our collaboration on a proven closed-loop aluminium recycling system.”

Novelis aluminium is already used in the Jaguar XJ, XF and XK models and the Land Rover Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Evoque.

To meet rapid growth in demand for automotive aluminium sheet worldwide, Novelis is more than doubling its global capacity for automotive.

Closed-loop systems for buying back, recovering and recycling aluminium scrap generated by customers during production are part of the supplier’s long-term target of achieving 80% recycled aluminium input by 2020. Its percentage of recycled input increased from 33% in fiscal 2011 to 39% in 2012.
