Nissan has begun production in the US of its fifth generation Altima after making over 4.4 m of the previous generations which date back to 1992 – the original was the US version of the Bluebird and replaced the Stanza.

The 2013 model – there are seven versions – is again assembled at the Smyrna plant in Tennessee and is the first of five new Nissan vehicles due out in the next 15 months.

Smyrna will also soon start building the Leaf EV and its battery packs, a new Pathfinder, and, in 2013, the redesigned Rogue.

Some Altimas will also be made in Canton, Mississippi and the engines will be produced in Decherd, Tennessee.

Smyrna employs approximately 5,600 people.
