Since building its first compact pickup truck in June 1983, about a year after Honda opened its Accord plant in Ohio, more than 8.2m vehicles have been assembled there. The Sentra car line was added in 1985.
Nissan claims to have been the first foreign automaker to bring vehicle assembly operations to the southern part of the US. Smyrna has accounted for capital investment totalling $2.5bn in its first quarter century.
Today, the plant’s 5,650 employees build five model lines.
