Nissan North America has announced the creation of 900 manufacturing jobs at its Smyrna plant in Tennessee. Production of this second generation SUV is due to commence “in the fall”, the division says.
The shift of Rogue production out of the Kyushu plant in Japan and into the US is part of Nissan’s broader strategy to localise production. By 2015, Nissan aims to have 85 percent of its products that are sold in the United States produced in North America. Rogue sales have risen from just under 100,000 units in 2010 to 142,000 units in 2012. In May, sales of this compact SUV reached an all-time high of 17,333 units.

In July 2012, Renault revealed that Renault Samsung Motors would also build the Rogue replacement. Production at RSM’s Busan plant in South Korea is due to start in 2014. Annual capacity of 80,000 units has been reserved for the Rogue. The plant has capacity to build 300,000 vehicles a year.
The new Rogue, which is yet to be revealed, will be one of the first vehicles to use the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s recently announced CMF architecture.
