Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has said it will enter the US market later this year with a pickup truck in the US based on its Scorpio platform.

“This will be followed by the Scorpio SUV (sport-utility vehicle) model,” Pawan Goenka, president of Mahindra’s automotive division, told Dow Jones.

A timeframe for the introduction of the Scorpio SUV model is yet to be decided, the report said.

Goenka had said the company’s plan to enter the U.S. vehicle market this year is on track despite the current downturn in the world’s biggest automobile market.

Mahindra has an agreement with US-based Global Vehicles Inc. to export fully built units of the Scorpio from India. About 300 dealers have been signed up for selling the Scorpio.

Goenka said the company may also consider assembling the Scorpio in the US at a later date.

The firm has denied interest in acquiring GM’s Hummer brand.

“We are pursuing our own models strategy and we do not want to tarnish our lean warrior strategy,” chairman Arnand Mahindra said of the firm’s US entry plans late last year.
