Mercedes-Benz USA is consolidating some of its operations with the construction of a new west coast regional facility on the site of the former Douglas Aircraft factory in Long Beach, California.

The property includes two aircraft hangars on 52 acres that MBUSA leased in 2013 for 15 years. Known as the Boeing 717 hangars, they total 1.1m sq ft, according to developer SARES-REGIS Group.

The site will serve as the future home of MBUSA’s western region vehicle preparation centre, western region, and learning and performance offices, which are all currently located in Southern California.

The location was once the home of Douglas aircraft such as the DC-8, DC-9 and DC-10. The last models produced, by then under Boeing ownership, were the MD-11 and 717 airliners and military transports. Aircraft manufacturing ended in 2006.

Located across the street from the Long Beach Airport in a mixed-use development known as Pacific Pointe at Douglas Park, the facility is expected to be ready to begin business operations in the first quarter of 2015.
