Automotive News Europe (ANE) said DaimlerChrysler is considering the move after Maybach’s 70 outlets there sold only 152 vehicles in 2005.
A DaimlerChrysler press release on Monday said that “over 300” Maybachs were delivered worldwide last year
The ANE report quoted Dieter Zetsche, chairman of DaimlerChrysler and the Mercedes Car Group, who said: “It makes sense from a resource point of view to ask yourself if we have the right setup.”
It was expected, when Mercedes-Benz originally conceived the idea for Maybach, that the car would sell 1,000 cars a year, with around 400 annually in the US, Automotive News Europe pointed out.
DaimlerChrysler’s statement said only 1,500 had been sold since the famous brand was revived in 2002.
Rival Rolls-Royce sold 796 Phantoms last year, an increase of 0.5% over 2004 and a 15-year high for the brand.
