The Detroit Free Press noted that GM had lost its lead to the Japanese automaker in Q1, selling 2.25m vehicles to Toyota’s 2.41m.


Toyota Motor spokesman Hideaki Homma told the paper the company sold 4,817,941 vehicles globally during the first six months of the year.


GM today announced sales of 4.54m units, down 3%, in the first half, and said it was on track to exceed 9m vehicles for the fourth consecutive year.


Toyota had said it expected to sell 9.85m units worldwide in 2008, up 5% on 2007 but recent reports by Japanese media have suggested it may next month lower that target.
