The X-type will therefore disappear just as the XF arrives in showrooms next spring to replace the S-type.
“This will reposition the brand upscale,” a Jaguar source told the trade newspaper.
Owner Ford’s attempt to compete in a prestige segment dominated by models such as the BMW 3 series, Mercedes C class and Audi A4 never succeeded. The entry-level Jag was seen as a retro design on a Ford Mondeo plaform that came with a poor finish relative to its supposed peers.
The report said however that the X-type will be sold elsewhere in the world through 2010, when production is expected to end. The model has just been given a cosmetic refresh to help support volume at the end of its lifecycle.
