Nissan India Motor said it would be the second product after the Micra to be built on the V platform at its plant in Oragadam, Chennai.

The model will make its public debut at the eighth China (Guangzhou) International Automobile Exhibition in December. The sedan would be launched first in China and in India in the second half of 2011.

It’s also expected to be sold in other markets where sedans are preferred over hatchbacks such as Russia, eastern and southern Europe and South America.

Nissan India managing director Kiminobu Tokuyama said: “Following the success of the locally made Micra, Nissan is revealing the first sketch of the second car to be produced in India.”

Nissan India sold 1,256 units in September 2010 with the new hatchback taking the lion’s share with 1,183 units. The Indian-made Micra will be launched in the UK and Europe from next month. Nissan Europe also imports the Pixo – a rebadged A-star/Alto – from India where it is made on an OEM basis by Maruti Suzuki.

The Oragadam plant has initial capacity of 200,000 units per year and can be expanded to 400,000 units when needed.
