Honda’s US unit on Wednesday (8 August) released first official images and a few details of the fully redesigned ninth generation 2013 Accord sedan and coupe, due on sale in North America this autumn.

This is the ‘wide body’ Accord designed primarily for the US, where it is built, but also made in Thailand for Asia-Pacific markets including Australia, and China.

The ‘narrow body’ version – called Accord Euro in some markets – is made in Japan and sold alongside or instead of the wider car, according to market.

Of its new model, America Honda Motor gushed: “The most sculpted Accord ever delivers an even more spacious and luxurious passenger cabin wrapped in an upscale, sophisticated exterior designed to stand the test of time.

It added that new interior packaging allows for increased passenger and cargo space in both the sedan and the coupe, while the overall exterior lengths are noticeably shortened, “contributing to a sportier driving character and easier parking”.

Technical details were not provided but Honda did say LED daytime running lights, headlights and taillights would be optional and “hint at the sophisticated technology and luxury available inside”.

Other standard or optional gear will include: lane departure warning, forward collision warning, claimed exclusive ‘LaneWatch’ blind spot display, ‘HondaLink’, a cloud-based system that connects to Bluetooth streaming audio, Pandora internet radio, SMS text message function and other digital content. The optional ‘Aha’ feature on HondaLink gives access to personalised restaurant searches, Facebook audio feeds and audiobooks via the audio system interface and voice recognition.
