America’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been called in following 28 complaints by customers who have bought 2007-2008 model year cars which have dual exhaust pipes that protrude beyond the car’s rear bumper.

They say they burned their legs when taking things out of the boot. The NHTA has already upgraded its probe to an engineering analysis, a step that is often the precursor to a recall.

A Mini spokesman in the UK said the company is aware of this issue and it is under investigation. He added: “As yet, no UK recall is planned as cars in this country have not at this time been identified as affected by the issue.”

The USA is one of the biggest markets for the BMW-owned, Oxford-built Mini. August sales of 5,469 were up 34% on a year ago.
