General Motors is to spend US$20m on its Bay City, Michigan powertrain operation to produce camshafts for the next generation Ecotec engine, bringing new investment at the plant to US$62.5m this year.
“This specific investment results in 15 jobs at the plant, but the cumulative employment impact of these three investments is 113 people,” said GM manufacturing manager Gerald Johnson.

The Ecotec – developed largely in Europe – is GM’s highest volume, four cylinder engine range and powers vehicles such as the Chevrolet Malibu and Equinox, the Buick LaCrosse and the new Regal, and the GMC Terrain. Planned versions to be built in the US will eventually be used in the Chevy Cruze which will soon replace the Cobalt. The Ohio-built line initially will use some imported GM engines.
