General Motors is to invest US$20m in machinery and equipment at its Fairfax Assembly plant to add future technologies and improvements to the Buick LaCrosse.

This will include eAssist, a light electrification technology that will boost highway fuel economy by 25% over the current model, the company said.

The Fairfax announcement is part of a US$2bn investment at 17 US facilities in eight states. Others are Bowling Green, Kentucky.; Arlington, Texas.; Toledo and Defiance in Ohio; Bedford, Indiana., and Bay City, Detroit, Flint, Lansing and Warren, all in Michigan. This builds on the US$3.4bn invested and 9,000 jobs created or retained in the US since mid-2009.

The Fairfax investment is primarily for manufacturing machinery, equipment and special tooling. As well as the LaCrosse, GM also builds the Chevrolet Malibu there.  With more than 3,900 employees, the Fairfax plant is the largest employer in the Kansas City Metro area.  The plant operates on three shifts and in 2010 produced 320,000 vehicles.
