GM is still interested in Malaysian automaker Proton, according to remarks reportedly made by GM CEO Rick Wagoner.

“We are interested in talking about the opportunity there, but I think it is still more a possibility for us than a probability,” CEO Rick Wagoner told reporters after the company’s annual meeting, Reuters reported.
Malaysia’s investment arm, Khazanah Nasional, last week said Germany’s Volkswagen and GM continue to be potential suitors for Proton.
Wagoner declined to provide details on whether GM was looking for an equity stake in Proton or an acquisition of the company, the report added.
“The ball is 100 percent in their court in … what kind of structure they want to pursue,” he said. “It’s more a long shot than a likelihood for us.”
Last week the Malaysian government set a new deadline to name a foreign partner for national car maker Proton Holdings ‘within the next three months after’ Volkswagen backed out from becoming an equity partner.
