As a part of efforts to speed up the recall of 1.6m vehicles to repair faulty ignition switches, General Motors has turned to rental car companies such as Enterprise, Hertz, and Avis to provide loaner cars for affected owners, reported The Car Connection.
The move comes because some owners of affected vehicles are now unwilling to drive them until repairs are made.

The repair process will start on 7 April and is expected to be completed in October.
The decision to turn to rental industry-supplied loan cars is unusual one and probably a first for GM, The Car Connection said. GM expects the recall to cost US$300m, a charge it will book this first quarter.
The affected vehicles have ignition switches that might fail or inadvertently move out of the ‘on’ position while driving, potentially leading to the loss of power, airbag deployment, and assistance for the steering and brakes.
