General Motors (GM) is hiring 200 additional workers for its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant later this summer before production of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu starts, a media report said. The plant will also manufacture the 2014 Chevrolet Impala.
The Detroit News, citing an unnamed source, said no additional hiring, other than those 200 workers, is planned for the plant.

Detroit-Hamtramck plant has 1,200 hourly and 150 salaried workers and also builds the Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera. The Malibu is also built at GM’s Kansas City plant and the current Impala at Oshawa, Canada.
Plant spokesman Chris Lee refused to comment on scheduling but said the plant would match production with demand.
Low sales of the Volt had caused the plant to be closed for five weeks beginning 19 March but a rise in demand prompted GM to cancel a week off of the temporary shutdown. GM plans to temporarily halt production of the Volt for an extra week as it tries to manage the hybrid’s inventory but that could be cancelled if sales improve.
