In its clearest signal yet that it wishes Cadillac to become a global luxury brand, General Motors has switched its chief lobbyist to a new position as head of the division.

Bob Ferguson, 53, has been with GM since 2010. As vice president for Global Public Policy, he is credited with helping the company strengthen its position and voice on Capitol Hill. He has worked with many regulatory agencies, on a wide range of business challenges related to energy, taxation, labour relations and finance policy.

In the newly created position – ‘vice president, Global Cadillac’ – Ferguson will be responsible for marketing, brand management and advertising for all markets. Responsibility for Sales is also expected to become part of the role in the new year, a statement from GM notes.

“Bob is a proven leader with vision and a will to win at this critical time for Cadillac,” GM chairman and CEO Dan Akerson said in a statement. “He brings a deep business and marketing background that has been marked by delivering results at every stop and under every circumstance. The Cadillac brand will hit a higher gear under his watch.”

US vice president for Cadillac marketing Don Butler and US vice president for Cadillac sales and service Chase Hawkins will report to Ferguson.

Bob Ferguson’s previous responsibilities in Washington will be assumed by Selim Bingol, who will also retain his current communications role and will become vice president of Global Communications and Public Policy. He will continue to report directly to Akerson and remain based in Detroit.
