The good news is that the plant will tool up to make a new V6 from late 2015. The bad news is that, in the meantime, around 560 workers at General Motors’ Romulus Engine Plant will be laid off temporarily.
A GM spokesman told the Detroit News 430 hourly workers plus about 130 temporary will be affected from the start of August with more laid off by the end of the year, and all by the end of the first quarter of 2014.

GM last April added US$5m to a previously announced plan to spend $385m at the plant. Employees knew layoffs would be part of the investment for a new fuel-sipping V6 engine, GM told the paper.
The spokesman said GM would help 141 salaried workers impacted by the move with possible jobs at other company locations. Some salaried workers and the majority of 130 skilled trades workers likely would stay at the plant during the retooling.
The plant builds currently builds V6 and V8 engines for a number of GM vehicles plus marine and industrial versions.
