With the ignition switch recall ongoing, General Motors has rehired a former public relations executive, Steve Harris, to benefit from his advice and experience during this troublesome period for the company.

The Detroit Free Press said he would replace Selim Bingol, vice president of communications, who resigned in April.

Harris retired in October 2009. Before retirement he was vice president of communications for three years.

GM spokesman Greg Martin said: “We continue to draw from a variety of expertise to help guide our response to the ignition switch recall. Steve Harris’ deep background with GM and proven experience will be of great help to us during this period of time.”

He added Harris would work for GM again for a “limited time.”
