Ford of Europe is to export the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine to the US in 2013, the company has announced. The direct injection turbocharged unit features in several European models, including the Focus.

Joseph Bakaj, vice president for Ford powertrain engineering, said that the smaller engine would be optional in at least one of the small cars offered by the company, according to Businessweek. That is expected to mean the Fiesta, which is made in Mexico for all three NAFTA markets.
