The dispute basically comes down to how the data is measured. Chevrolet’s claim comes from sales figures submitted by Ford and GM dealers. R.L.Polk & Co. collects official registrations data.

Ford executives told Automotive News that it will demand that Chevrolet stop advertising that it is the top US brand. Polk data reportedly shows that Ford registered 2.630m vehicles in 2005, compared with 2.625m for Chevrolet. Chevrolet dealers had earlier reported sales of 2.651m vehicles in 2005, compared with Ford’s 2.634m.
