Fisker Automotive, the luxury EV maker based in California, has surprised observers with the appointment of Tony Posawatz, the former head of the Volt programme at General Motors, as its new chief executive officer.

He replaces Tom LaSorda, the former Chrysler Group boss, who only took up the role in February after joining the company as vice chairman and executive adviser last December. LaSorda said that part of his brief had been to find a permanent CEO for Fisker although no mention of that was made at the time of his appointment.

LaSorda, a 32-year auto industry veteran, will continue to have an advisory role with Fisker.

Henrik Fisker, executive chairman and co-founder, described Posawatz as “one of the world’s most experienced leaders in vehicle electrification technology and the plug-in ecosystem”.

One of Posawatz’s first jobs will be to bring the Atlantic plug-in hybrid to market; the saloon is expected to cost in the region of US$50-60,000.

Fisker also announced the appointment of former GM, Chrysler and SG Automotive executive Joseph Chao as executive vice-president and CEO of China and Asia. Fisker plans to start sales in China later this year.
