Sales of plug-in electric cars in the US rose to more than 100,000 last year according to Green Car Reports, the third year-on-year sales increase since first going on sale in December 2010.

The Nissan Leaf recorded sales of 30,200 units in 2014, compared to 22,610 units in 2013 although sales of the Chevrolet Volt dropped to 18,805 from 23,461 the previous year.

The Leaf and Volt comprise the majority of sales of plug-in electric cars in the US, with some 20 other models recording low-volume sales of less than 250 units a month.

According to Inside EVs, a news website that focuses mainly on electric cars, Tesla recorded sales of 3,500 for Model S luxury sedans in December, which is the best single month result for any electric car to date in the US. Sales of Nissan’s Leaf for December were 3,102 units.

Sales of plug-in vehicles account for about 1% of total light-duty vehicles sold in the US and despite falling petrol prices sales of EVs continue to move upward.
