A GM spokesman said that while sales figures are not yet available, potential customers have made 632,000 visits to GM sales sites on eBay.

GM is hoping the programme will boost sales in California, where its market share is about 13.5%, less than the 19% nationwide. The company began listing Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Pontiac vehicles on EBay sites on Aug. 11 and is testing the programme with dealers in California through Sept. 8.

Car shoppers can use EBay’s “buy it now” option to make an immediate purchase or negotiate a price. All sales close at the 225 participating dealerships when the buyer picks up the vehicle.
