This would lead to a hearing on 9 May, said the news agency.

Both the United Autoworkers (UAW) union and the International Union of Electrical Workers – Communications Workers of America (IUE-CWA) union have rejected the latest offer.

Delphi has not confirmed that it will file.

The filing increases the possibility of a strike against Delphi, although Reuters quotes analysts who say that negotiations with unions are likely to continue. One analyst suggests that the added pressure of the court process could force an agreement.

IUE-CWA units have reportedly already authorised strikes if necessary and UAW is expected to hold a vote to authorise a strike if Delphi files.
