Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has reached “tentative” agreement with unions on new employee contracts.

The deal – still to be ratified by United Auto Workers (UAW) members later this month – covers staff at the Mount Holly, Gastonia and Cleveland plants in North Carolina.

“Current labour contracts covering plant employees expired at midnight this past Friday,” (9 April) DTNA told just-auto in an emailed statement.

“Details of the tentative settlements remain confidential.”

UAW said the deal concerned 5,700 workers at the three Freightliner facilities in North Carolina, while voting to ratify or otherwise the proposed contract is scheduled for 17 and 18 April.

“These were by no means easy negotiations; like so many industries, the heavy trucks business has had some setbacks because of the economy,”  said UAW heavy trucks department vice president General Holiefield.

“But our team tackled the issues realistically and came away with agreements that we can confidently take to the membership for ratification.”

The Mount Holly truck manufacturing builds medium-duty Freightliner trucks, employing 140 staff, while the Cleveland site makes Freightliner heavy-duty trucks with 835 personnel.

The Gastonia Components and Logistics Plant manufactures truck parts and components and employs 671.

“These tentative agreements are another victory in securing jobs for the membership,”  said UAW Region 8 director Gary Casteel.

“We were able to obtain a number of items we sought from these negotiations, particularly job security during this economic downturn.”

The union added terms of the proposed agreements would not be released until members had voted.
