The automaker said its Toluca, Mexico, assembly plant – the sole source of one of Chrysler’s more fuel efficient models – would continue to build the car, little changed since its launch apart from detail exterior cosmetics and a new dashboard.


Over 1.3m PT Cruisers have been sold in over 60 countries since 2000 but it has gradulally been dropped from most export markets, including the UK. It was also assembled at Magna Steyr’s plant in Austria for a short period several years ago.


Reports in 2006-7 suggested the line would be axed for the 2008 or 2009 model years but, though the blade eventually fell on the convertible version, the hatchback was reprieved.
