The United Auto Workers has reached agreement with Chrysler, Fiat and the US government on concessions to its 2007 contract and healthcare trust, the union said last night.

The union said in a statement that the agreement, which Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne had said was essential if his company was to reach an alliance with Chrysler, was subject to UAW member ratification, that must be completed on Wednesday, and meets the US treasury conditions for emergency loans to Chrysler.

Canadian Auto Workers ratified a concessionary deal with Chrysler over the weekend.

Now union agreements have been reached, Chrysler must renegotiate debt with bondholders to meet the US government’s 30 April deadline.
