A Chrysler spokesman declined to detail the number of applicants but union officials had earlier anticipated around 8,000 to 10,000.

Most of the new hires will work on a second shift scheduled in the third quarter of 2013.

According to just-auto‘s Production Life Database (PLDB), the new vehicle is the 2014 model year replacement for the current Jeep Liberty/Cherokee and should use a Fiat-Chrysler platform, most likely the front- and all-wheel drive CUSW architecture. In April 2010, Fiat said the Cherokee replacement would be launched in Europe in early 2013.

In November 2011, Chrysler confirmed Toledo North as the plant to build the Liberty/Cherokee replacement from 2013. The model name may also switch to Cherokee for all markets: the current vehicle uses the Liberty model name only in North America.

It is believed that the next generation Cherokee will be offered with a new 3.2-litre version of Chrysler group’s Pentastar V6 engine. Presently, the unit is available only as a 3.6-litre V6.
