This takes total investments in US facilities to US$2.1bn since the formation of the new company under Fiat ownership in June 2009.

The investment includes the construction of a 638,000 sq ft body shop as well as the installation of new machinery, tooling and material handling equipment. Work on the expansion began this summer and will be completed next year.

Manufacturing chief Scott Garberding said the Belvidere assembly plant, which currently builds the Jeep Compass and Patriot and Dodge Caliber, is “transforming itself to become one of the safest and most efficient assembly plants”.
