The 53 mile range is an increase of almost 40% on the previous generation model (certified at 38 miles of electric-only range).

The second-generation Volt uses an 18.4-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack to travel on battery power first before a gasoline generator kicks in.

General Motors estimates a total driving range – with the use of the back-up gasoline engine generator – of more than 400 miles.
