BorgWarner has announced that it will supply turbochargers for rear wheel drive cars and pickup trucks featuring Ford’s upcoming EcoBoost engine, a downsized petrol direct injection unit with dual turbochargers.
The engines allow a V8 engine to be downsized to a V6 and deliver the same performance with a 20% improvement in fuel economy, and a 15% reduction in CO2.
BorgWarner turbo and emissions systems president Roger Wood said that the company’s expertise in temperature-resistance materials and optimised turbine wheels contributes to making such vehicles more efficient.
Combining petrol direct injection with turbocharging reduces turbo lag and engine knock, allowing drivers to enjoy the benefits of fuel economy without sacrificing performance, the supplier said.
