The suede-like material is used in European and Japanese luxury vehicles including Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW and Audi and is expected to become familiar to owners of luxury and sports versions of Chrysler, Cadillac and Mercury automobiles, among others.

“For decades, Alcantara has been a household name in the luxury automotive market, particularly with the top European manufacturers,” said Derick Fronda, executive director of Toray Ultrasuede America. “We are extremely excited to now bring Alcantara, and its cutting-edge technology, elegance and performance, to the United States via its largest and most respected auto companies.”

The proprietary production process of this unique material is characterised by automation and constant control of all phases from spinning to dyeing and is designed to reduce the impact on the environment by adhering to a policy of eco-efficiency higher than that required by law.

New versions of cars from DaimlerChrysler, Ford and GM featuring Alcantara will be announced throughout the autumn and 2007.
