British labour body, Unite, has issued a cautious appraisal of its meeting today (24 February) with PSA Group CEO, Carlos Tavares, rating it “relatively positive” as the French automaker seeks to take over the Opel operations including Vauxhall, from General Motors.

Unite’s comments follow Tavare’s opinion this week highlighting: “In a speedy way we can implement significant synnergies” should it receive the green light to purhcase Opel for an as-yet unspecified figure.

“It was a relatively positive first meeting in which Mr Tavares gave assurances current production commitments would be met should the takeover with PSA go-ahead,” said Unite general secreatry, Len McCluskey.

“It was also heartening to hear PSA group wants to work with Unite and recognises the skill and efficiency of our members who make the world class Astra and Vivaro vans.

“I’ll be meeting over 100 Unite shop stewards from Ellesmere Port, Luton and Toddington on Monday to report back fully on my meeting with Carlos Tavares.

“Going forward both Unite and PSA have agreed to work together and engage constructively as developments unfold.”
