BMW UK says it is confident its upgraded X3, launched last weekend, will appeal to existing consumers but potentially also to a younger audience given its wide specification list.

“We are looking to build on our existing consumer profile,” BMW UK product manager for X series models, Brian Cox, told just-auto in Austria at a winter test event near Innsbruck.

“It [X3] is definitely more modern looking and technically it appeals to a younger audience. We have the connected drive [for example] such as Google maps, you can play your iPhone through it.”

Cox concedes the X3 on-road price tag of GBP30,000 (US$47,330) “is an amount,” but insists given the competition – he cites the Q5 for example – it is “very, very comparable and competitive”.

He also highlights that new X3 is GBP115 cheaper than its predecessor and comes with an increase in specification such as leather seats as standard.

Cox said he expects the market segment to grow with the X3, adding BMW’s order book for the SUV is “very strong” as the manufacturer looks to supply the UK with 5,000 next year.

Cox also noted the previous X3 was closer to the X1 but the updated version now “sits comfortably” between the X1 and X5.
