The Volkswagen Passat has been named as Britain’s best used car in the annual What Car? Used Car of the Year Awards.
The Passat also won the What Car? Best Used Family Car Award, before beating nine other category winners to scoop the top prize.

‘A Passat 1.8 S on a ’98 S-plate with 22,000 miles should set you back around £10,000,’ said What Car? There were also plenty of successes for Vauxhall, which picked up a trio of awards – the Omega was voted Best Used Executive Car, the Vauxhall Zafira won Best Used MPV and the Vauxhall Astra kept its crown as Best Used Small Hatchback.
Peugeot picked up two awards: the 306 GTi-6 walked off with Best Used Hot Hatch for the second year on the trot, while the 206 took the Best Used Supermini title for the first time.
The Mercedes S320 was named as Best Luxury Used Car, Nissan’s Terrano II took the Best Used Off-Roader title, the Volvo 850 was awarded Best Used Estate Car and Subaru became a first-time winner, taking the Best Used Sports Car prize with the Impreza Turbo.
What Car? also judged the manufacturer-backed approved schemes in the annual Good Used Car Dealer Guide, free with the October issue. This year Toyota Assured came out on top. The judges described it as having ‘an excellent all-round package of approved benefits with dealer forecourt prices that offer fine value for money.’
