The new agency will be one of four in the Driver, Vehicle and Operator (DVO) group of agencies in the D for Transport (DfT).

The new DVO hasn’t yet been given a formal name but DfT is searching for a director general and expect to make an appointment by year’s end.

The other agencies in group are the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency, the Driving Standards Agency and the Vehicle Certification Agency.

The aim behind the changes is to better co-ordination and customer service for the road transport industry.

The UK’s regional Traffic Commissioners will stay wholly independent of the new agency but should benefit from better co-ordinated support.
