General Motors’ Vauxhall division says it has no plans to change advertising promoting its new lifetime warranty of up to 100,000 miles for new cars.

The UK operation outlined its warranty plans in a blaze of publicity last week but insists its advertising meets the required standards detailing mileage restrictions.

Vauxhall’s comments follow a decision by Kia to comply with a ruling from the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) following recent print and on-air campaigns promoting its seven year warranty.

Kia was asked to amend its advertising surrounding its warranty with the ASA noting: “The ads should not appear again in their current form. We told Kia to ensure that future ads clearly stated exclusions and restrictions, including the mileage limit, applied to the seven-year warranty.”

Kia agreed to the changes with the TV commercials now noting ‘terms and exclusions apply,’ on screen during the whole of the transmission with the same wording on its print ads. The radio ad now includes the 100,000 mile limit.

“We accept the ASA ruling and immediately acted to change the advertisements concerned which were back on air prior to the adjudication being released,” said Kia UK marketing director Simon Hetherington.

However, Vauxhall said it has no plans to change its warranty advertising.
“We are quite happy with our advertising – the 100,000 miles is very prominent,” a Vauxhall spokeswoman told just-auto. “We have no plans to change.

Vauxhall’s advertising carrying the warranty information goes to air in the UK next week.
