The general secretary of the Amicus trade union is meeting with workers from the Nissan plant in Sunderland on Monday to discuss the company’s announcement to cut 60 production jobs.


Derek Simpson said: “This is a significant decision by the company to go public on redundancies that will create uneasiness amongst the workforce.


“We believe the company has gone about this announcement in the wrong way by simply advising the works council when, in fact, they have a legal duty and responsibility to consult with Amicus.


“We are now in the process of seeking legal advice on the matter to see if we can challenge the method they used for redundancy selection.”
