Bill Morris, head of the Transport and General Workers Union, will meet Vauxhall chairman Nick Reilly today (14/12/00) in a bid to reverse the decision to axe 2,200 jobs at the company’s Luton plant, Ananova reports.

Mr Morris has said he is willing to to the General Motors headquarters in Detroit if it helps save the jobs.
His meeting with Mr Reilly is due to take place at the Luton Vectra plant this afternoon, which was the scene of an angry demonstration by 350 workers yesterday.
A TGWU spokesman said: “We will be asking the company to justify their decision — to show the unviability of the Luton plant.”
The union has described the decison as “indefensible” and suspects Luton was targeted because it is easier to lay workers off in Britain than the rest of Europe.
