The next Corolla will be launched in four different body-styles, including a three-door hatchback, a five-door hatchback, a saloon, an estate and, for the first time, an MPV called the Corolla Verso. The three and five-door hatchback models will be built in the UK at Burnaston, Toyota’s Derbyshire plant. The fifth bodystyle, the saloon, will complete the range and be launched in the summer of 2002.

The design of hatchback, saloon and estate is developed from an original concept by Toyota’s European designers, based in the design centre ED² in the South of France.

However, the Corolla Verso was based on a design concept originated by Techno Art Research in Nagoya, Japan. Its development follows research indicating strong demand for a sub-Previa Toyota monospace with more car-like attributes. The Corolla Verso borrows elements from the styling of the highly successful Yaris Verso and is a successor to a previous generation model called the Spacio, sales of which were restricted to Japan and some Asia-Pacific markets.

Since the Corolla was launched in 1966, over 29 million units have been sold world-wide, making it the best selling car ever. The new European Corolla will make its debut at the IAA, the Frankfurt Motor Show, on 11 September, with sales beginning in the UK from early 2002.
