Four car makers are in the top 10 of best global green brands according to Interbrand’s 2012 report.

Toyota is the top green brand for the second successive year; Honda is third with Volkswagen fourth while BMW is 10th.

The report gauges the gap between public perception of a brand’s environmental performance (or “green image”) compared to actual environmental practices using publicly available data and information.

Toyota’s success, according to Interbrand, is because it has continued to maintain environmental sustainability as part of it’s core management priority. Interbrand also cites the expansion of the Prius hybrid  into a full family range 15 years after the model’s launch as a further success story for the company.

Here’s the top 10:

1 Toyota
2 Johnson & Johnson
3 Honda
4 Volkswagen
5 Hewlett-Packard
6 Panasonic
7 Dell
8 Siemens
9 Danone
10 BMW
