Frost & Sullivan forecasts that stop-start fitment in Europe will rise from under half a million units a year now, to almost 8m by 2015.

Speaking at an AW Briefing event in London, Valsan said that manufacturers are looking to key technologies like stop-start to meet tighter fleet average CO2 emission regulations averaged across their line-up

“Premium brands are aiming to standardise stop-start across all models,” he said.

“But some volume makers have also indicated that they will be fitting stop-start systems as standard in some segments.”

F&S forecasts that the French OEMs (Renault and PSA) will be fitting 2m-2.3m stop-start systems annually by 2015.

Earlier this year Valeo said it had signed a contract with PSA Peugeot Citroen to equip over 1m vehicles with its stop-start technology by 2011.

The parts maker reckons fuel consumption and CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 15% in urban driving cycles with its system. It estimates that, in cities, a car spends up to one-third of its time at a standstill with the engine idling unnecessarily.

Bosch has shipped 500,000 start-stop systems to BMW and Mini since it started production in 2007 and said three more vehicle manufacturers will start fitting them in the next few months.
