The 2001 Castrol/IMI Gold Medal has been won by Sir Ian Gibson CBE FIMI. The Castrol/IMI Gold Medal, is awarded to the individual, group or organisation judged to have made the most outstanding contribution to the UK motor industry, in its widest sense.

A panel of senior executives from across the motor industry awarded Sir Ian the highest marks in a shortlist of five finalists, who were judged on a range of criteria. This included evidence of a sustained level of successful achievement, benefits to the industry, pioneering of new techniques and initiatives, and evidence of outstanding leadership.
Having carved out one of the most distinguished careers in the motor industry, in which he developed Europe’s most efficient and productive car plant, in Sunderland, Sir Ian became the first European to become senior vice president of the Nissan Motor Company. He is now leading the department of trade and industry’s new automotive innovation and growth team, which is tasked with identifying and implementing a strategy to secure the UK’s future position as a source of manufacture for vehicles and their components.
Commented Sir Ian: “It is a special pleasure to be recognised by those within the industry. Automotive remains the most exciting and challenging business in the world, and I hope that those new to it get as much enjoyment as I have.”
