A £230 million project, led by Siemens, is set to link thousands of UK garages under a public-private contract to combat MOT fraud and eliminating the build-up of paper records, says the UK`s Times (25/8/00).
The project, replacing the existing paper-based system of certification to be abolished in 2002, will establish Internet links between the Vehicle Inspectorate and 19,000 garage forecourts.

Each of these authorised MoT testing stations will be equipped with a personal computer, printer and a link to the inspectorate, enabling each garage to directly feed information about cars tested into a central database.
Under the ten-year contract, Siemens will provide training and a help desk, says the newspaper.
