Nissan has applied to its local authorities for permission to add 25,000 square metres of capacity to its Sunderland plant in North-East England.
The expansion is being driven by Nissan’s success with its Infiniti and Qashqai models among others and should permission be granted, work could start within a few months.

Nissan says the new capacity will focus on the body shop and final assembly area, with the automaker confident it will secure permission from Sunderland City Council.
“1984 we came here and they [Sunderland City Council] are used to us and expanding,” a Nissan Sunderland spokesman told just-auto.
“We are used to working with them.”
No figure is available as what the extra 25,000 square metres will represent in terms of investment, but Nissan says it forms part of a GBP1bn (US$1.56bn) injection into the plant to 2015 “starting with the Note through to Infiniti.”
