Rolls-Royce delivered 3,538 cars in 2011, the most in its 107-year history. The sales tally for last year was a 31 percent gain over the 2,711 cars delivered in 2010, the BMW Group division stated. The previous best had been 3,347 in 1978.

The company notes that the sales expansion was thanks to multiple regions, with Asia Pacific up 47%, North America up 17% and deliveries in the Middle East rising by 23%. China and the US performed particularly well in 2011, as did the UK, with sales also rising strongly in Germany and Russia.

The sales total was spread across six cars: Phantom, Phantom Extended Wheelbase, Phantom Drophead Coupé, Phantom Coupé, Ghost and Ghost Extended Wheelbase.

In related news, and having announced plans in September 2011 to expand its Goodwood assembly plant, the company now adds that construction work will commence in February.
