Malaysian car maker Proton Impian has so far supplied 120 dual LPG/petrol-fuelled Wira saloons to the Humberside Police in north-east England and these have now been joined by 10 new 1.6-litre Impian models.

Humberside Police run 270 dual-fuel vehicles, saving £200,000 on running costs as LPG is around half the price of petrol and diesel at UK pumps. Using dual-fuel effectively doubles the mileage range of every car converted.

Proton was among the first brands to supply cars for Humberside Police#;s conversion programme and its analysis shows that the Wira, based on a previous Mitsubishi Lancer model, returns lower running costs than competitors#; vehicles.

“A combination of low running costs and plenty of space in the Wira#;s boot for police equipment in spite of the space taken up by the LPG tank has worked well for our force”, Humberside fleet & supplies manager Allan Hocking said.

“A larger boot and a combined fuel economy figure of 42 mpg from the Impian#;s engine give the new model even greater potential”.
